Come on, if you’re honest, you know that indoor go karting is fun, but it would be so much more fun if you ended up top of the podium at the end of a race. Our racing instructor experts have given us their little nuggets of advice to help you do just that.
Whether you’re competing against your family, friends or colleagues, or taking part in one of our competitive indoor go karting races, here’s how to ensure you come away with the bragging rights.
1. Learn how to improve your lap times
From ensuring you’re sitting comfortably and learning about how faster drivers use the racing line, to working out your grip and slowing down, all this can help you to speed up your lap times and work your way to the front of the race. We’ve written a whole blog about it – read it and put it into practice.
2. Use your body
You can work your body to your advantage to help you have a smooth race. Study what F1 drivers do, particularly when going round corners. They stay straight and don’t let the G-force push them to the side of the vehicle – this help to control the handling of the car. Try doing the same, so your weight continues to be distributed evenly through the kart.
3. Become a master at overtaking
Unless you’re on poll position and manage to stay there, you’re going to have to overtake other drivers to win the race. It’s probably the most difficult part of indoor go karting to master. Going down the inside line and praying the other driver doesn’t turn is a big risk, as you could collide, so wait, be patient, bide your time and look for the gap – and keep your eye on what your opponent is doing. If you can overtake on a straight bit of track, even better – overtaking on corners can be difficult as losing the racing line can cost you places.
4. Stop drifting
Winning a race can come down to a few tenths of a second, so keeping control of the kart is a must. That means no drifting. Yes, in rally driving, when the driver is trying to control the car on dirt and mud, drifting is hugely beneficial, but when indoor go karting it will cause you to lose speed, traction and, most importantly, time.
5. Have a smooth drive
The top racers all have one thing in common – they keep their drive as smooth as possible. This means no sudden braking, maintaining a consistent speed, holding the racing line, and no oversteering. The more relaxed you can be in the kart, the better you’ll drive.
To recap, here’s how to win an indoor go karting race:
- Learn how to improve your lap times
- Use your body
- Become a master at overtaking
- Stop drifting
- Have a smooth drive
